Neighborhood Profile
Originally called the Fourth Ward, or Freedman's Town, Midtown was founded in the 1800s as Houston's African American area. The area still retains many of its original cobblestone and brick streets. While an important residential and commercial corridor in the first half of the twentieth century, the area began to decline in the 1950s. While the 1970s and 80s brought a wave of Vietnamese development, the area was left underutilized until the beginning of the 2000s.
Today, Midtown is home to newer mid-rise and loft developments and town homes, as well as retail and dining. Midtown may be best known for its vibrant nightlife, featuring a dozens of bars, lounges and night clubs. The area offers quick commutes into Downtown, Metro Light Rail service and a vibrant and revitalized retail and entertainment corridor.
